Robert Moog: RIP
Author: T-bone
Music has its share of unsung heroes like the guy who runs the mixing board in the studio, the woman who does the actual vocals you hear on a record for artists who really can’t sing, the music critic… well, ok not the music critic but you get the point.
Robert Moog was truly one of those unsung heroes of music. In fact, had he not named his famous series of “Moog” synthesizers after himself, not many people would know who he was. Although he didn’t create the synthesizer itself, he created a unique version of one that gave the artist more control of the actual sound while being physically smaller and lighter.
When people think of the 1970’s, they tend to focus on things like polyester and disco. Now that he’s passed on, it’s time to give Moog his due. Not many people could flavor the music of the 1960’s, 1970’s and beyond in such a pervasive way. Listen to many old rock records and you’ll hear Moogs all over the place. Even modern day rockers looking for a more classic feel like Sheryl Crow or Lenny Kravitz will go pick up an old Moog and do something interesting with it.
So here’s to Robert A. Moog and thanks for rejuvinating rock-n-roll.
