The Most Annoying IE7 Bug Ever
Author: T-bone
I’m a web designer. As a result, I’m often “forced” to try new browsers to get used to designing for them and make sure all the code still does the same stuff. So when Microsoft’s IE7 was released a few days ago, I knew I’d have to install it pretty quickly and see what the deal was. I was hesitant to install it at work so I figured I’d test it out at home first. I wish I hadn’t.
I’m familiar with bugs and browser issues and I can deal with things not displaying the same. I’m a Firefox user, mainly, and it took me a little while to get used to using it. IE7 seems like a Firefox/Safari hybrid with the smooth fonts and what not, but among all the bugs I see people complaining about so far there’s ONE I can’t seem to find any information on and it’s an annoying one.
When I close IE7, IT STAYS ON THE SCREEN EVEN THOUGH IT’S CLOSED AND GONE. By that I mean, I can’t see my desktop (or anything else) again without clicking the “Show Desktop” button! It’s like taking an IE7 tarp and putting it over my desktop. Insane. So I close IE7 and it doesn’t even LOOK like it closed. The first time it happened, I clicked the little X again and all it did was just show a small piece of the desktop through the “tarp.”
Like I said, I can handle some bugs but when I close an application, ESPECIALLY a browser, I expect it to fucking GO AWAY and let me do something else BESIDES have to click the “Show Desktop” button again. I’m not one of those Microsoft bashers but I’m pretty pissed off about this one. It makes me never want to use a Microsoft browser again. I don’t even know what to do about it. You can’t really “undo” this and I guess I’ll have to go find some IE6 install file and try to get it back but you know how Microsoft is…sometimes you pass that point of no return and you can’t get back.
If anyone’s heard of this IE7 bug and can point me to a fix, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Yes, you can ‘undo this’. IE7 can be uninstalled through add/remove programs like any other application, returning you to IE6.
The reason you can find no word on this is because no one else is running into your exact issue. Every IE7 troubleshooting step so far has been to systematically remove any add-ons, tool bars, extensions, activex controls (just like you would with FF instability - it’s pretty much always crappy addons you installed).
IE7 allows you to do this with ‘Tools | Manage Addons’.
Have fun, and try to ease up before you have a heart attack over a web browser… O_o

Thanks. I’m just weary because sometimes when you uninstall stuff Windows acts weird afterwards. I’m going to try it later though… I was just ticked because I like the browser and that was really annoying me.

Hey, T
I had a similar problem this summer with another software (3D mapping) I was testing at work. The problem was how the software was dealing with specific graphic cards. The only way to get rid of the tarp effect was to reboot the PC. Very annoying. The bug was fixed by the developpers a month later.

I don’t think that I had that problem, but IE7 was such a pain to use that I just gave up and went to Mozilla.

You can always go into taskmgr and delete the process if it won’t stop.

It’s not that it won’t stop - it’s gone. It just appears to be on my screen. Probably a conflict with the adapter but you know, come on… drivers are up to date and all that. Weird.

I have this exact same problem and man is it ever annoying, I thought I’d never find anyone else with the same problem! Any luck with a solution?

Actually, I followed another poster’s advice and looked at my addons, I run a program called PopUpCop, I disabled it and wholla! I upgraded to a newer version of the program and it seems to work better with IE7.
Do you have popupcop running too? Or maybe some other 3rd party addon?

Man - you rock!!!! That worked great. It can be enabled, just had to upgrade it to the latest version. Wacky!! Thanks a lot, bro!

I just wanted to say thanks. I was having this exact problem too and upgrading popupcop solved the problem instantly.
